Web Design is Boring
First of all, let me explain what I mean by Web Design here: It’s the process of designing the interface of a web site, which involves images, HTML and CSS. No Javascript, because that really doesn’t count as “design”.
I’ve been involved in web design for about 3 years now. What started as something very exciting is now something very boring and repetitive. There are hardly any new things to learn when you reach a certain level. It doesn’t take many years, and I’m certainly almost there already.
This is the main reason I’ve been away from this the last few months. I lost interest in a plenty of web design resources because I keep reading/hearing the same things over and over again (and for some reason, most articles seems to be targeting beginners anyway). Even when I start a new web design project, I don’t get that satisfying dose of challenges while working on it. The only exciting part left for me is making your design accessible and usable. Now that’s fun (in a geeky way).
Maybe if you’re a graphic designer you will actually enjoy what you’re doing, because every project seems different to you. But if you’re more of a slice ‘n’ dice guy with some good design background like me, then you probably know what I’m talking about. It’s more like a matter of when to get a project done than how.
It could be that I’m just more interested in the programming part of web development, but you can’t deny that Web Design starts getting dull after a while.
If you think otherwise, PLEASE please prove me wrong.
I think you’re mixing coding and design a little bit, which is natural given the abundance of Indian one-stop-shops popping up everywhere. However, they’re actually two very different things. Web Designers today are expected to create the art and the canvas. I hardly think Da Vinci would have been as great of an artist if he had to spend time weaving the canvas or threading his brush with freshly collected bore bristles.
Coding, which you learn, is boring and you do reach critical mass with your knowledge, to the point where everything anyone can tell you is old hat. Design as interactive art is fluid, and in and of itself can never be boring. The only way that gets boring is if you run into your own creative limitations. Principals of design can be learned, typography, grids, the true white space, etc, generic principals that help you define your creativity. But they too can become old hat just as easily as coding if you’re not able innovate within yourself.
You are born with about as much creative juice as you’re going to get. I know and accept that no matter what I learn or do, I will never be as good as the best. But I can become better within my own limits, and I feel as if I am, I’ve never regressed when creating something new. Inch by inch and sometimes by a leap or a bound, but still, always within my limits. I guess it’s a question if your satisfied with the level of your own competency.
yes its boring..
the same ideas for all project..
where to put logo, menu, boxes..
then slice..
its boring dude..
I totally agree. I recently switched from Web design to Flash development for this very reason.
I realized that the best Web designs are boring by nature, because the goal of modern Web design is not a creative “message” like Print advertising or Art. Rather, it’s to create a (branded) software interface for dynamic Web content.
Some people get off on designing usable interfaces or spending hours on tiny icons, but to me that’s a sideshow. Something like designing a dashboard on a car rather than the car itself…
